Golden History
Golden was founded during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush in June of 1859. The mining camp was originally named Golden City in honor of Thomas L. Golden. Golden City was the capital of provisional Territory of Jefferson from 1860 to 1861 and also the capital of the official Territory of Colorado from 1862 to 1867.
The first establishments in Golden were a toll bridge, two stores, and a commercial garden. Golden quickly became a popular supply center with its convenient location at the mouth of Clear Creek canyon, which aided in its role as a transportation hub for freight wagons and the railroad. Golden also grew exponentially as an industrial town. Clear Creek provided water for milling, smelting, manufacturing, and generating electricity. Golden’s industries included a cigar factory, candy factory, paper mill, glass plant, three lime kilns, and several stone quarries.
In the 1870s, Golden became the site of the Colorado School of Mines. Today, the world-class institution offers degree programs that include engineering, geology, and environmental sciences.
