Evergreen History
The area that is Evergreen today was once a summer hunting ground for the Ute, Sioux and Arapaho. The area quickly changed with the discovery of gold on Chicago Creek. The prospectors were followed by an influx of settlers and traders. Thomas Bergen was one of these homesteaders who arrived to the area in 1859. Just north of present-day Evergreen is where he established a ranch and stage stop. Later settlers established their homesteads south of Bergen’s Ranch along Bear Creek Canyon, and the downtown area that would later become Evergreen subsequently grew around the confluence of Cub Creek and Bear Creek. Settler Dwight P. Wilmot is credited with naming the area Evergreen. Today, his home still functions as a private residence.
Evergreen grew on the lumber demand for buildings in Denver. By the late 1880s, the town was home to 200 people and operated 6 sawmills. Evergreen became a popular summer destination for Denver residents and many resorts opened in the area. In the 1950s, the popularity of automobiles and improved utilities attracted many people to stay year-round and Evergreen thus became known as a commuter community.
